The inverted tree symbolizes all Vedas and all religious scriptures. The verses found in all scriptures are the leaves. Its different branches indicate different divisions of original religion and all subjects of worldly knowledge like sciences, history, etc.

Vedas are also called Shruties or knowledge gained by hearing (audio-knowledge). Vedas symbolize the main trunk from which later scriptures like Smruties, Samhitas, Upanishads and Darshans have developed in India. The holy Mantra OM symbolizes the roots of the inverted tree. OM is also called Beej or the seed Mantra. Vedas, the ancient scriptures of India, root from OM.

The word Veda means knowledge. Logos = knowledge. Logy = branch of knowledge; e.g., biology, physiology, pathology, etc.). Any material knowledge is gained by hearing spoken words from another person. This is always audio-knowledge (Shruti-Gyana = Veda). Knowledge gained by hearing and seeing is stored in brain as memory (Smruti = audio-visual impressions).

The holy mantra OM is the root of all branches of knowledge. OM is at root of speech (Vani) and spoken words. Words of any spoken language root from OM. Only a few scholars understand the relationship between OM and all branches of human knowledge - material, spiritual, and religious.

OM is a symbol of human voice or speech (Brahma-nad, Pranava, and the root of all spoken languages (Vani) in the world. From OM roots spoken words. Words make sentences and verses of all spoken language in the world. By speaking and hearing one understands and learns names of objects seen by eyes. We communicate with one another by speaking and talking. A growing child receives knowledge from parents and teachers in young age. This knowledge is mostly audio-knowledge coupled with names of objects seen with eyes and their memories stored in brain.

In course of millenniums nearly 240 Upanishads developed from the Vedas and later on Six Hindu Darshans developed from the earlier Upanishads. Sankhya, Yoga and Vedanta are three popular Darshans. All these scriptures deal with the subject of self-knowledge and spirituality. This is an ever-increasing tree of all kinds of human knowledge.

The textbooks of all material knowledge are the branches of this inverted tree. The branches symbolize various branches of knowledge (-logies) of arts, medicine, music, economics and religions scriptures also. An average student catches one branch (of material science) by learning a few things here and there. Hearing lectures of one teacher or one priest satisfies majority of people.

There is usually rigidity of beliefs in sectarian religions. This situation also exists in Yoga study and spiritual scriptures. The verses and beliefs are like leaves and fruits. This superficial knowledge creates an Ego of knowledge. Ego of knowledge is a hurdle to further learning and it prevents revision of old religious beliefs. This also happens in other branches of worldly sciences like physics, medicine, etc. Like ready-made sweet fast-foods from shops, people want quick fruits (results) of their desires. Average priests preach religious commandments of moral codes and give hopes in name of God. Most people are generally satisfied with simple knowledge of religious books and get results of their Karma.

With invention of sciences newer knowledge always get added. With passage of time material knowledge like astrology, sciences, math, medicine, and economics, always need some revision of old principles. In the same manner the social doctrines of religions also need revision with passage of time. Hinduism is an ever-growing tree of knowledge. Newer branches of sectarian religions, Sampradayas get started. The rituals, social customs and old traditions preached by past prophets and ancient scriptures need a change with time and place.

A true seeker of God should not remain attached to leaves (words of the scriptures) and branches of religion, if he wants to see God face to face. He must search the deeper meanings of ancient verses. One should perfectly understand the trunk, the roots and the original seed.

OM Tat Sat. That is Truth. God is truth. This is the shortest description of God. Gandhji said, "Truth is God". The trunk and roots of Sanatan Dharma (Eternal religion) are firm and sound. The tree has remained unshaken in spite of heavy blows from invasions and the rule of Islam for six centuries followed by the British Christianity rule for last two centuries in India.

The meaning of symbolism of inverted tree becomes clearer in verses Nos. 2- 3 and 4.
